Among the trees and waterways of the Argentine province of Misiones lies the evidence of a unique experience. The Jesuit Missions were part of a project that was completed in 1609 and had more than eighty-six thousand inhabitants. When the Jesuits founded the first Guaraní reduction, the objective was to incorporate native inhabitants of this region into the colonial order of the time in a different way: they would be towns inhabited only by Guaraníes and the European presence was limited to the priests of the Company of Jesus. The Jesuits reworked an order through Catholic belief. The proof of the success of this model was that they did not need ruthless violence for its implementation. Of those thirty towns that constituted the Jesuit Missions, four have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and are the focus of this book.
